Everyday Courage: Defending Democracy through Values-Driven Leadership

Friends,

We find ourselves in challenging times, when leadership is tested not by easy choices, but by moments demanding courage and clarity grounded in our deepest values. Observing the erosion of democratic norms, especially here in Oklahoma under leaders like Ryan Walters, I’m reminded daily of my responsibility—not to remain comfortably silent, but to actively champion the ideals that sustain a thriving society. This isn't about partisanship; it's a moral imperative of leadership. Join me in exploring how everyday courage can transform your leadership impact and reaffirm our shared commitment to democracy.

Clear eyes. Full hearts.

Field Report: Strategies for Everyday Courage in Organizational Leadership

In "Everyday Courage: How Leaders Can Defend Democracy and Drive Progress," I drew from my experience in Chile and my leadership journey in U.S. public education to reframe this political moment as a moral test. Drawing inspiration from thought leaders like Timothy Snyder, Maria Ressa, and Ronald Heifetz, I outline how values-based leadership is more essential than ever.

Here are five actionable strategies leaders can implement within their organizations:

  1. Reject Passive Compliance: Don’t normalize harmful policies or practices. Speak up early and often. Model principled dissent in the face of ethical compromise.
  2. Protect Institutional Integrity: Create structures and cultures that safeguard mission, equity, and transparency—even under political or financial pressure.
  3. Anchor in Purpose: Clearly define your organization’s social purpose. Use it as a compass when navigating conflict, resource decisions, or advocacy efforts.
  4. Respond to Activism with Empathy: Don’t silence or sideline employees who raise hard truths. Listen. Engage. Frame activism as a sign of mission alignment—not opposition.
  5. Build a Courage Culture: Share examples of brave leadership across your organization. Name the values behind key decisions. Make it safe to take principled stands, even when it’s uncomfortable.

These steps—when taken consistently—help organizations act as beacons of integrity in uncertain times. Everyday courage is not about grand gestures. It’s about small, values-aligned actions that build trust and shape a resilient democratic culture.

The Inner Work Behind Outer Impact

Why I Use the Enneagram in Leadership Coaching

Leadership isn’t just about what you do—it’s about how and why you show up the way you do. Under pressure, even the most capable leaders default to automatic patterns that can derail clarity, connection, and impact.

The Enneagram gives us language for those patterns. It reveals not only your core strengths, but also your internal drivers, blind spots, and stress responses. As a certified Enneagram practitioner and executive coach, I use this framework to help leaders deepen their self-awareness, interrupt unhelpful habits, and lead with more grounded presence.

Whether you're navigating complexity, change, burnout, or team misalignment, the Enneagram helps you build a leadership approach that’s not just skillful—but sustainable.

I recently built the Enneagram Under Pressure tool to help clients better understand how each Enneagram type responds to stress and uncertainty. It is useful for leaders navigating high-stakes environments while supporting team resilience and self-awareness.

Dear Reader, The best team I’ve ever been a part of was built on trust, not control. We pushed each other, grew together, and accomplished more than most thought possible. We took risks. We told the truth. We owned the mission like it was ours—because it was. That didn’t happen by accident. It happened because of Deborah Gist. Deborah created the kind of leadership culture that made you want to bring your best. She modeled humility and backbone at the same time—giving us space to lead while...

Dear Reader, There’s a moment I come back to often—a memory that reminds me why emotional agility isn’t a “nice to have” in leadership. I was facilitating a high-stakes leadership meeting during my time as Deputy Superintendent. The data was clear, the stakes were high, and I came in ready to lead with logic. But something was off. I could feel it—tightness in my chest, urgency in my voice, a charged silence in the room. In the past, I might’ve pushed through. Data in hand, agenda set. But...

Dear Reader, Authenticity in leadership sounds simple—just be yourself, right? But in practice, it’s far more complex. It’s about being real in a way that builds trust, strengthens relationships, and leads to better outcomes. It’s about balancing honesty with emotional intelligence—expressing what needs to be said in a way that moves people forward. This is a lesson I’ve learned the hard way. I can recall plenty of situations I’d love a do-over on, moments where I reacted rather than...
