Dear Reader, Authenticity in leadership sounds simple—just be yourself, right? But in practice, it’s far more complex. It’s about being real in a way that builds trust, strengthens relationships, and leads to better outcomes. It’s about balancing honesty with emotional intelligence—expressing what needs to be said in a way that moves people forward. This is a lesson I’ve learned the hard way. I can recall plenty of situations I’d love a do-over on, moments where I reacted rather than responded. My reaction was driven by my instinct to immediately fix the problem—to jump into action, solve the issue, and move forward. With experience comes wisdom, and if I could go back, here’s what I’d tell my younger self. One particular moment stands out. A direct report shared an issue between my team and a colleague’s team. The minute I heard there would be delays, the need to deliver bad news to principals, and major adjustments ahead, my blood pressure spiked and my “I know the right way to fix this” instincts kicked in. What I didn’t do was pause, gather more perspectives, or get curious about what was really happening. Instead, I called an emergency meeting, made it clear the issue had to be resolved, and laid out my own solution. The result? A disempowered team stuck implementing changes that didn’t actually solve the root problem. I hadn’t created space for different viewpoints. I didn’t check my own assumptions. And I certainly didn’t tend to relationships or fairness in how I was leading. I was lucky—I had built enough trust and credibility that my colleagues gave me grace. I apologized when I realized my mistake, but the cultural damage took time to repair. Dear Reader, The best team I’ve ever been a part of was built on trust, not control. We pushed each other, grew together, and accomplished more than most thought possible. We took risks. We told the truth. We owned the mission like it was ours—because it was. That didn’t happen by accident. It happened because of Deborah Gist. Deborah created the kind of leadership culture that made you want to bring your best. She modeled humility and backbone at the same time—giving us space to lead while...
Dear Reader, There’s a moment I come back to often—a memory that reminds me why emotional agility isn’t a “nice to have” in leadership. I was facilitating a high-stakes leadership meeting during my time as Deputy Superintendent. The data was clear, the stakes were high, and I came in ready to lead with logic. But something was off. I could feel it—tightness in my chest, urgency in my voice, a charged silence in the room. In the past, I might’ve pushed through. Data in hand, agenda set. But...
Dear Reader, In today’s world, leadership isn’t just about making decisions or driving results. It’s about creating space—space for others to thrive, innovate, and collaborate in meaningful ways. As leaders, we’re being called upon to rise to challenges we’ve never faced before. The pandemic reshaped how we think about work, connection, and expectations. And now we’re seeing clear evidence that those who lead with empathy are not just creating better workplaces—they’re driving better...
