Authenticity - The Power of Being Genuine

Dear Reader,

Authenticity in leadership sounds simple—just be yourself, right? But in practice, it’s far more complex. It’s about being real in a way that builds trust, strengthens relationships, and leads to better outcomes. It’s about balancing honesty with emotional intelligence—expressing what needs to be said in a way that moves people forward.

This is a lesson I’ve learned the hard way.

I can recall plenty of situations I’d love a do-over on, moments where I reacted rather than responded. My reaction was driven by my instinct to immediately fix the problem—to jump into action, solve the issue, and move forward. With experience comes wisdom, and if I could go back, here’s what I’d tell my younger self.

One particular moment stands out. A direct report shared an issue between my team and a colleague’s team. The minute I heard there would be delays, the need to deliver bad news to principals, and major adjustments ahead, my blood pressure spiked and my “I know the right way to fix this” instincts kicked in. What I didn’t do was pause, gather more perspectives, or get curious about what was really happening. Instead, I called an emergency meeting, made it clear the issue had to be resolved, and laid out my own solution.

The result? A disempowered team stuck implementing changes that didn’t actually solve the root problem. I hadn’t created space for different viewpoints. I didn’t check my own assumptions. And I certainly didn’t tend to relationships or fairness in how I was leading. I was lucky—I had built enough trust and credibility that my colleagues gave me grace. I apologized when I realized my mistake, but the cultural damage took time to repair.

That’s why this edition of Whole Leader Dispatch is all about leading with authenticity—alongside other emotional intelligence skills. Here’s what’s inside:

Clear eyes. Full hearts.

Field Report: Leadership Insights

Ron Carucci’s Harvard Business Review article explores the misuse of emotional intelligence, particularly when leaders unknowingly manipulate emotions to serve their own needs rather than fostering genuine connections. He identifies three common ways emotional intelligence can be inauthentic, highlighting the need for self-awareness and honest reflection to ensure that leaders use their emotional intelligence ethically and effectively.

Key Takeaways:

  • Empathy vs. Hero Syndrome: Leaders may believe they are being empathetic but instead rescue employees to fulfill their own need to feel indispensable, rather than fostering accountability and growth.
  • Active Listening vs. Validation-Seeking: Some leaders feign active listening while subtly steering conversations to confirm their own perspectives, prioritizing being "right" over genuine openness to diverse viewpoints.

Self-Awareness vs. Approval-Seeking: Leaders who frequently solicit feedback may actually be seeking reassurance rather than constructive criticism, putting the burden of their insecurities on their teams. your content here...

Connect & Engage

Authenticity is a cornerstone of great leadership, but we all have areas where we can improve. According to the Genos Emotional Intelligence Model, authentic leaders demonstrate seven key behaviors—which one do you most want to strengthen?

🔹 Openly Expressing Thoughts, Feelings, and Opinions – Speaking honestly while staying aware of impact.

🔹 Expressing Oneself in a Way That Is Sensitive to Others – Balancing candor with care.

🔹 Facilitating Robust, Open Debate – Encouraging different perspectives without fear of conflict.

🔹 Being Open and Honest About Mistakes – Owning missteps and leading with humility.

🔹 Honoring Commitments and Keeping Promises – Following through to build trust.

🔹 Encouraging Others to Share Their Thoughts and Emotions – Creating psychological safety for open dialogue.

🔹 Responding Effectively When Challenged – Staying curious and non-defensive in disagreement.

Dear Reader, In today’s world, leadership isn’t just about making decisions or driving results. It’s about creating space—space for others to thrive, innovate, and collaborate in meaningful ways. As leaders, we’re being called upon to rise to challenges we’ve never faced before. The pandemic reshaped how we think about work, connection, and expectations. And now we’re seeing clear evidence that those who lead with empathy are not just creating better workplaces—they’re driving better...

Dear Reader, Let’s take a moment to talk about resilience — not as a buzzword, but as a skill we all need to navigate the ever-changing terrain of life and leadership. Resilience isn’t some innate personality trait or a resource reserved for a lucky few. It’s a dynamic, learnable state that we can cultivate together, one intentional practice at a time. I know. I've overcome clinical burnout by honing the way I understand myself, manage my emotions, and cultivate curiosity and empathy. I'm...

Dear Reader, In her insightful work on self-awareness, organizational psychologist Tasha Eurich highlights the power of seeing ourselves clearly as leaders. She explains that self-aware leaders make sounder decisions, build stronger relationships, and are more effective overall. But self-awareness doesn't just happen - it requires intentionality to understand deeply "what kind of leader am I?" and anchor ourselves in our core values. Reflecting on this, I want to share a moment of insight...
